Irrigation

Opening and closing the system

In spring, we open the system and inspect it to be sure it is in proper working order for the upcoming season. In the fall, we close the system by blowing forced air throughout each zone to remove the water to prevent freezing and cracking pipes.  See note at the bottom about winterizing your irrigation system.

Backflow Testing

We can test your backflow to ensure it is functioning properly. This test is required for all water municipalities in Indiana. This is test is required either once or twice per year depending on your backflow device model. Most of our customers will receive letters from their water company stating the deadlines and frequency of testing for their backflow device.

We do all of the paperwork for you. We will mail the paperwork to the water company and we will mail a copy to you for your records. We do ask when your receive the backflow test form from the water company, that you mail it to us at: Mattingly Lawn Care, Inc., ATTN: Steve Mattingly, PO Box 39268, Indianapolis, IN  46239.  This will keep us from handwriting the forms which can cause missing information and confusion when the forms are received by the water company.

*Note on Winterizing Your Irrigation System*

Every year, before the first freeze, the ritual of irrigation "blow out" becomes the priority for all irrigation systems that are in regions of the country where the frost level extends below the depth of the installed piping. Even if you have drained some water out of the system, the remaining water can freeze, expand and crack the PVC piping (rigid, white pipe), usually from fitting to fitting. Polyethylene pipe (flexible, black pipe) is used in many freezing climates. Although polyethylene pipe is more flexible and can expand under pressure, water left inside could freeze and rupture the pipe walls. Freezing water in the backflow assembly will damage the internal components and could possibly crack the brass body. To minimize the risk of freeze damage to your irrigation system, you’ll need to "winterize" your irrigation system
